Rookie Website Mistakes To Remedy in Less Than 5 Minutes
Owning a business is no joke. The laundry list of "to-do's" is never ending and time is definitely a limited resource. But just because you are limited on time, doesn't mean that your ever-important web presence should suffer. After all, it is 2016 and we are all aware at the importance of a strong website. That is why we have rounded up some of our favorite website mistakes that can be remedied in less than 5 minutes. Grab a cup of coffee, hop on your website, and get ready to make some changes!
Make it Easy to Contact You
This sounds ridic, right? Recently we visited the websites of nearly 200 creatives and this was the #1 biggest mistake that we found! Lack of email addresses, no contact page, no direct email shown, etc. You name it, we saw it. Only about 20-30 websites out of 200 actually provided their direct contact info right in the footer on every page, making it incredibly easy for us to contact them. You never know how much time your next client has to visit your website and contact you----so make it overly simple on them.
Limit Page Choices
Don't paralyze your clients by overwhelming them with too many choices. A loaded navigation bar is sure to freeze the most discerning of website guests right in their tracks, leaving them guessing what it is you actually do. You can also bet that they won't ever make it to contact you or to your shop if they are paralyzed by an overwhelming number of choices in your navigation bar. We recommend sticking to the basics: About, Contact, Services (Hire Us, Classes, What You Offer, etc), Examples of your work---Portfolio, Blog* Shop*. Tip: Make sure that your logo at the header of your website links directly to your home page. There is no need to have a separate "Home" button in your top navigation.
Utilize Your Footer
The footer of a website is often neglected, if not completely ignored on most websites. Turn that ugly baby into a sexy lady by filling her out with these important things:
- Contact email
- Social links
- Terms + Conditions
- Copyright Info
- All Rights Reserved
- Site Developer/Designer Credit
- Secondary Logo
Check For Calls to Action
Someone visits your website, great. They click on each page from your tidy navigation bar, awesome. And then like a friendly puppy that just spotted a squirrel *poof* they're gone. On average, you have 15 seconds to earn another page view, or to gain a sale by providing a call to action before that guest disappears from your site. Don't miss out on the opportunity to gain their trust and make them stay just a little longer. Visit each of your website pages and ensure that a call to action exists for each page (and sometimes even more than one per page depending on your layout). These calls can lead to a variety of things like more information, shop, blog, etc. really anything that provides more information for your website visitors.
Refine Your Photography and Copy
During my days in art college a wise art professor once said, "There's no sense in diluting your portfolio with less than perfect work." The same is true for your website when it comes to your photos and copy. Simply stated, only display your best photos. Visit each page on your website and remove any photos that won't WOW your visitors. Read through all of your copy and remove unnecessary extra sentences or information that isn't essential to getting your point across. Remember, on average you just have 15 seconds to retain a guest or lose them. Make each second count!
