On the hunt for an

Squarespace

WEB DESIGNER

Hello Big Idea is looking for a Web Designer who thrives at the intersection of strategy, structure, and style. This contract-first position is perfect for someone who can bring ideas to life digitally—cleanly, clearly, and with great care. We’re not just looking for aesthetics—we’re looking for intention, usability, and execution.

This role starts as a contract position, with the potential to evolve into a long-term partnership or hire. If you're detail-oriented, self-driven, and able to translate brand strategy into smart, strategic websites, we want to meet you.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and build websites primarily in Squarespace, using modern UX/UI best practices

  • Build responsive, mobile-first layouts with a focus on content hierarchy and user flow

  • Create wireframes, high-fidelity mockups, and final sites that align with each client’s brand and goals

  • Handle domain setup, DNS configuration, SSL, and basic integrations (e.g. forms, analytics, CRM tools)

  • Implement on-page SEO best practices and QA for browser/device responsiveness

  • Collaborate with our strategy and creative teams—bringing ideas to life with clarity and craftsmanship

  • Deliver organized, launch-ready files with clean documentation and naming conventions

What We’re Looking For

  • 3+ years of experience in web design, ideally in an agency or freelance setting

  • Deep experience in Squarespace (not just content updates—you’ve built full sites)

  • Strong understanding of UX principles, layout hierarchy, and responsive design

  • Basic working knowledge of HTML/CSS (bonus points for platform-specific overrides)

  • High attention to detail—both visually and organizationally

  • Proven ability to work independently, stay organized, and hit deadlines

  • Comfort with feedback and iteration in a fast-paced creative environment

  • Tools you should know: Adobe XD or Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Notion, Slack, Dropbox

  • Ideally based in Kansas City (but remote candidates considered if they’re exceptional)

What We’re Not Looking For

  • Template tinkerers who haven’t built full sites

  • Designers who want creative freedom but can’t execute within constraints

  • Freelancers who ghost, miss deadlines, or bristle at feedback

  • People who prefer being told what to do at every step

  • Portfolio-only designers with little understanding of UX

Why Contract-First?

Because we want to work with someone who can show us—not just tell us. You'll be looped into scoped projects with clear expectations, set timelines, and an internal team who supports great execution. If it's a match, we’ll explore longer-term options.

Preferred Location

We believe the best work (and relationships) often happen in person. We prefer candidates located in or near Kansas City, though we’re open to remote applicants who excel in independent communication and execution.

Things to Consider:

This role starts as a contract-first position, with the potential for ongoing work or contract-to-hire if it’s the right fit.

We prefer candidates based in Kansas City, as we value in-person collaboration—but we’re open to remote applicants who are exceptional communicators and highly self-directed.

This is a project-based engagement, with clear scopes, timelines, and expectations.

You’ll work closely with our internal team, but with a high level of independence and ownership over your deliverables.

Compensation is project-based and aligned with experience level, scope complexity, and timeline. We’ll discuss rates during the interview process.
